Sheffield Trainer’s Clever Cup Victory

Reading Time: 2 mins

Sheffield greyhound trainer Sean Davy is celebrating victory at the 2016 Molson Coors Queen Mother Memorial Cup.

Owlerton Stadium-based Sean triumphed on home ground with his greyhound, Clever Jamie, who crossed the finish line in a time of 38.83 seconds.

Sean, from Goole, is one of 21 trainers attached to Yorkshire’s premier race track.

Sean has been attached to Sheffield for the last 10 years and this win ranks as his best achievement at the track to date.

Sean said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won the Queen Mother Memorial Cup. It is a flagship event which attracts the country’s top greyhounds and trainers. It was a special day at my home stadium, Owlerton.”

The esteemed Queen Mother Memorial Cup event is held at Owlerton Stadium every Mother’s Day in honour of the late Queen Mother.

John Gilburn, managing director of Owlerton Stadium, said: “The Queen Mother Memorial Cup is always a fantastic occasion and this year was no exception with many areas of the stadium sold out.

“We were extremely proud to see one of our own trainers come away with the victory. Sean is a very talented trainer and thoroughly deserved this win with Clever Jamie.

“Her Majesty the Queen gives her blessing for Owlerton Stadium to hold the event in her late mother’s name and we are privileged to be the only greyhound venue in the UK to be given such an honour.”

The Queen Mother Memorial Cup is one of two special events at Owlerton Stadium in March.

There will be a double bill of racing action at the Hillsborough-based track next week when the stadium stages its annual Cheltenham Festival of Racing event.

Racing fans can enjoy three hours of live greyhound racing followed by live action from the third day of the 2016 Cheltenham Festival where the main race of the day will be the World Hurdle.
