One of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium’s top dogs has won a top prize at a major industry awards ceremony.
Three-year-old Geelo Sapphire, trained by Carl Perry, was voted Bitch of the Year at the Greyhound Board of Great Britain national Greyhound of the Year awards, held at London’s Westminster Plaza Hotel.
Geelo Sapphire made the shortlist after being voted for by members of the greyhound industry press as one of the top three in her category, following major wins at Owlerton’s Three Steps to Victory race meeting and the Lowther Stakes at Towcester during 2017 – claiming the top £10,000 prize in both.
Trainer Carl Perry said: “It’s obviously a tremendous achievement for Geelo Sapphire and myself, I’m absolutely delighted to see her recognised for some huge success during 2017.
“I’m also extremely grateful to everybody at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium. Owlerton is such a fantastic, prestigious venue, and I’m proud to call it our home track.”
Dave Perry, general manager at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: “Geelo Sapphire’s path to success is an impressive one – winning one £10k top prize in a year is excellent but to win two is special.
“Following on from that, to then be recognised with an award shortlisting, and to go on and claim top prize, is an incredible achievement. Huge congratulations to Carl and Geelo Sapphire from everyone here at Owlerton.”
