Sporting success for Sheffield Greyhound

Reading Time: < 1 min

A Sheffield-based greyhound racing team is set to fly the flag for the city at a prestigious national awards ceremony.

Local greyhound Geelo Vegas has been nominated in the Sprinter of the Year category at the Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s glittering Greyhound of the Year Awards, held at the Lancaster Hotel in London on 25 January.

Owned by Nic Brereton of Geelo Racing and trained by Carl Perry, Geelo Vegas has had a fantastic start to his career which began with a convincing victory at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium in August 2014 live on Sky Sports. Since then he has gone on to win the National Sprint in Nottingham and claimed victory on Irish Derby Final Night at Shelbourne Park in Ireland.

“Geelo Vegas has had a fantastic few months with some great wins under his belt. He has had nine races in this country winning five of them and finishing second on four occasions – he has not finished outside the top three in his English sprint career.

“The way he races is a joy to watch – he pings from the traps and often destroys the field which is great for the people cheering him on to see. I’d like to thank those involved with Geelo Racing, particularly our trainer Carl Perry, for all their hard work and helping us to be in with a chance of winning this national award.”

John Gilburn, managing director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: “To watch Geelo Vegas in action is fantastic and the fact that he is owned locally is great for the greyhound industry in this area. We will be hoping for a Sheffield win on the night!”
