Spotlight on Owlerton Investment

Yorkshire’s leading greyhound stadium has completed a £100,000 investment at its track to make sure visitors don’t miss a second of the racing action.

Owlerton Greyhound Stadium has pumped the six-figure sum into new track lighting providing better viewing for the public and a more economical and eco-friendly approach to energy use.

This recent investment follows a £500,000 programme in 2013 to boost the venues’ spectator experience.

John Gilburn, managing director at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: “Providing a good quality visitor experience is at the heart of everything we do here at Owlerton and making sure every aspect of the track is at its very best is a vital part of this.

“The old lighting was over 40 years old and, as in all aspects of life, technology has moved on so we were in need of an upgrade. The new lights mean the lighting level has been tripled which is of great benefit to our customers who want to keep up with every second of the racing action on the track.

“The lights are also much more economical and, as they use less than half of the electricity than previously, they are more environmentally friendly which is also a really important consideration for us.

“We are delighted they are now in place allowing all our customers to enjoy our greyhound racing, stock cars and speedway events in brighter surroundings.”

Owlerton Stadium welcomes more than 200,000 visitors every year and around nine million people have enjoyed greyhound racing at the Hillsborough venue since its opening in 1929. It hosts 250 greyhound race meetings every year, as well as speedway, stock car racing, charity nights and other special events.
