One of the richest greyhound sprints in the UK will take place in Sheffield this summer when a popular race is revived as part of an inaugural BresMed Festival.

Trainers will be vying for £4,000 in prize money which will be awarded to the winner of the BresMed Northern Sprint at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium.

It will take place on Tuesday 4 August during the final of the three-week BresMed Festival sponsored by Sheffield-based health economic and outcomes research consultancy, BresMed.

The heats and semi-finals will be held at Owlerton on Tuesday 21 and 28 July respectively.

John Gilburn, managing director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: “With £4,000 in prize money at stake we’re expecting this to be an incredibly exciting BresMed Festival culminating with the BresMed Northern Sprint.

“The Northern Sprint was, for years, a popular race in the greyhound calendar and we’re delighted to be bringing it back to Sheffield in partnership with BresMed.”

Nic Brereton, managing director at BresMed and owner of star greyhound, Geelo Vegas, said: “We are hugely excited about staging the first BresMed Festival at Owlerton this summer.

“After a successful year of racing, I was keen to put something back into the sport and thought resurrecting the Northern Sprint was a great way to do this.

“We’re expecting trainers from all over the UK to compete in Sheffield for the chance to win the lucrative prize money.”
