Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium is the most ‘liked’ greyhound venue in the country.
Yorkshire’s premier race track has reached 10,000 likes on its Facebook page – significantly more than any other Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) licensed track.
Owlerton Stadium welcomes more than 200,000 visitors every year and around nine million people have enjoyed greyhound racing at the Hillsborough venue since its opening in 1929.
The Stadium, which won the Outstanding Achievements in Sports, Hospitality and Tourism award at the 2014 Sheffield Business Awards, hosts 250 greyhound race meetings every year, as well as speedway, stock car racing, charity nights and other special events.
It stages some of the biggest and most prestigious competitions in the greyhound calendar including the Queen Mother’s Memorial Cup, Three Steps to Victory and the Steel City Cup.
To mark the milestone, Owlerton’s 10,000th Facebook fan, Lisa Goldenburgh, won a meal for four at the Panorama Restaurant – the largest in Sheffield with 300 covers. She celebrated her 11th wedding anniversary at the stadium with her husband and two sons.
John Gilburn, managing director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: “We’re extremely proud to reach this major social media milestone and it’s yet another indicator of how Owlerton Stadium keeps going from strength to strength.
“We would like to thank our customers for their continued loyalty and for helping us to reach this target.
“Through ongoing investment, innovation and partnership working, Owlerton has become an industry-leading model of best practice. Trainers from all over the country travel to Sheffield to compete.
“Every year, we host a bumper sports and events programme and we have developed a national reputation for championing greyhound racing and supporting the local community.
“Our customers also recognise that we care passionately about greyhound welfare and many get involved with fundraising events we host on behalf of Sheffield Retired Greyhounds.”
During the summer, Owlerton is offering a ‘Beer, Burger and a Bet’ deal where visitors can receive admission, a race card, beer, burger and a bet for £3 throughout July and August.
Other events include Fab Free Tuesdays, where students can receive admission, a drink, two £1 bets and a hot dog and chips free of charge.
